Conclusions of the 1st i-HeCoBatt Webinar

On the past 4th of November of 2021, the i-HeCoBatt team organised the first project webinar on the safety and standards of batteries in Electric Vehicles (EV). The event counted with the participation of 53 attendees representing “Research and Development Organizations”, “Public Authorities”, “SME’s” and other organisations.

This meeting (moderated by LOMARTOV) offered an excellent opportunity to disseminate the project results, share experiences of other invited speakers, and also learn from related EU funded projects in terms of safety and standards.

4th General Assembly and Review Meeting of i-HeCoBatt celebrated online

The 4th General Assembly of i-HeCoBatt was celebrated on 3rd September 2020 online, due to the COVID19 restrictions. However, it was the right chance to compile all the work carried out by the consortium during the first period and to plan properly all together the next steps. By this mid-term milestone, i-HeCoBatt project already fulfilled some of the most critical milestones, such as the thermal characterization of the current heating and cooling system, the final model and the design of the A-Sample HE prototype and the development of the thermal management diagnostic and safety SW tool. The activities are progressing appropriately and the first relevant results were shared between the partners. The day after, the Review Meeting was celebrated online and the consortium had the chance to share with the European Commission’s project officer the progress done during the first half of the project.

Electric vehicule are bring into focus to be a green and clean car. New concept of car with more safety, comfort and reliability. The mains challenges on the subject are the price and autonomous. Ihecobatt project keeps focus on these two aspects. These can be upgrade by eco-conception and energy management. The battery pack needs to have a thermal management. The goal of a thermal management system is to deliver a battery pack at an optimum average temperature. CEA works consist in characterizing, understanding and optimizing the new heat exchanger management with CIDETEC. The efficient and eco conception of the hardware part are realized by MIBA with AUDI and CEA support.

Expected progresses of the i-HeCoBatt project

The i-HeCoBatt project has already reached its halfway, closing the first period at the end of June 2020. By that time, the standard cooling solution has been tested in the climatic chamber, modelled through CFD – 1D tools and started to be tested in on-board AUDI vehicles. The core of this activity was to set the reference of the project.  At the same time, the first heat exchanger prototype was designed and optimised through CFD modelling and simulation. The prototype has been manufactured and some mechanical tests were performed to validate the concept, while the sensorised solution is currently being produced and tested.

The scope of the i-HeCoBatt Economic & Environmental Studies

According to the European Environmental Agency, transport is responsible for approximately 30% of the EU’s total CO2 emissions, of which 72% comes from road transportation. Indeed, CO2 emissions from passenger transport represent the highest contribution, accounting for around 61% of the total related to road transport in Europe (European Parliament, 2019a). In this regard, the EU has set a sever goal to reduce 60% of this sort of emissions (from transport) by 2050, compared to 1990 levels (European Parliament, 2019b).

The SW tools used in the i-HeCoBatt project

In the developments that are made today, sharing information between companies and having it accessible from anywhere in the world is a requested requirement. The visualization and the handling of the data facilitate the understanding that, together with the acceleration of the validations of the developed systems, makes these tools indispensable.
